How to Find Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is the first step to building a beauty routine that actually works — and to getting the most out of your Beauty in a Box! Here's a simple guide to help you figure out exactly what your skin needs.

The 5 Main Skin Types

1. Normal Skin

Normal skin is well-balanced — not too oily, not too dry. It has small pores, a smooth texture, and rarely experiences breakouts or sensitivity. Lucky you!

2. Dry Skin

Dry skin often feels tight, especially after cleansing. You may notice flakiness, rough patches, or a dull complexion. Dry skin craves moisture and rich, nourishing products.

3. Oily Skin

Oily skin produces excess sebum, giving it a shiny or greasy appearance — especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). Enlarged pores and frequent breakouts are common.

4. Combination Skin

Combination skin is oily in some areas (usually the T-zone) and dry or normal in others (like the cheeks). It requires a balanced approach to skincare.

5. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reacts easily to products, weather, or stress. You may experience redness, itching, burning, or breakouts when using certain ingredients. Gentle, fragrance-free products are your best friend.

The Blotting Paper Test

Not sure which type you are? Try this simple test:

  1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry
  2. Wait 30 minutes without applying any products
  3. Press a blotting sheet to different areas of your face
  4. Hold the sheet up to the light and check for oil

Lots of oil everywhere = oily skin. No oil at all = dry skin. Oil only in the T-zone = combination skin. Little to no oil with no tightness = normal skin.
